WebBarium Impregnated Polyethylene Spheres (BIPS) have been recommended for evaluation of GI transport. Small spheres are designed to evaluate gastric emptying; larger spheres are designed to accumulate at an obstruction or stricture. Inconsistent results and not outlining the GI mucosa limit the technique. WebBarium Sulfate is embedded within the microspheres and acts as a radio contrast agent for X-ray imaging and other diagnostic procedures. These spheres are also know as barium impregnated polyethylene spheres (BIPS) and are often used in veterinary medicine.
